A very quiet day with rain keeping us inside during the morning. This afternoon we left the mooring crossing the canal to the CRT wharf where the water tank was topped up and the rubbish disposed. After a week of use the water tank had dropped to ¾ full. I guess that means we have four weeks capacity without going to water minimization mode. Whilst on the wharf I transferred 50 litres of diesel from containers to the fuel tank. Jan got into a conversation with a local boater who is also waiting for the stoppages on the canal to be lifted. His news was the stoppage between Ellesmere and Whitchurch will be lifted tomorrow. I think we will wait for CRT to inform us before we head towards Whitchurch. I’ve looked at the canal map and it’s a long way back to the nearest winding hole if the stoppage is still in place!
New Project
I’ve started work on a new project. It won’t be much use on the boat, but then we don’t plan to spend the rest of our lives afloat. I’m going to build a distributed media network. It will require a central computer server that will hold our media collection (video, music & photos). This will be accessible over both an intranet and the internet. I’ll need to make a Network Access Server (NAS) to achieve this. The intranet (eg, home network) will be both wired (eg, ethernet) and wireless. There will be a variety of clients such as TV’s, tablets smartphones and computers that will access the data on the NAS. I’ve already decided not to go down the commercial path with equipment and software. It’s expensive and not much fun! So some decisions need to be made about equipment and software to get the desired project outcome at the lowest price.
