I had an Idea & Life in the Hermit Kingdom

Yesterday evening I spent some time online searching for a suitable bike red tail light.  The criteria was it had to be red, bright, flash and usb rechargeable.  The charging port must be accessible when the light is fitted to the bike.  A suitable light was identified, but it’s too expensive (for me!)  I shall wait until the price drops.

Then I had an idea.  Did I have a flashing red LED amongst all my “accumulated stuff” that could might offer a interim solution?

Searching though the “box if bits” I found a cheap usb headlamp that had been a “gift” as part of an online purchase.  The headlamp did have a flashing red light function.  The elastic headband was removed without damage and placed back in the “box of bits” because it might come in handy at some future date.  I’d already rejected the idea of tying the headlamp to the bike with the headband.  My idea extended to the headlamp being secured to the back of the bike helmet.

Araldite was used to secure the base of the light hinge to the helmet.

Life in the Hermit Kingdom

I’m not referring to North Korea but our own Hermit Kingdom here in West Australia.  I’ve seen another article from Nigel Farage commenting upon our tyrannical “big brother” government suppressing the population, with the State Premier, Mark McGowan getting a particular mention.  Nigel quite accurately mentioned the rallies and protests.  I laud his comments.  The government’s actions since the start of the pandemic have been quite reprehensible and they should be roundly condemned for a total of nine COVID related deaths and twelve days of lockdown since the beginning of 2020.  The government should have opened the borders.  There should have been more deaths and longer lockdowns.  The economy should be in recession rather than booming.  is period.   <sarcasim mode off> Nigel is an intelligent man so why spout this nonsense?  I can only assume he needs to earn a living as a media commentator and there’s too much competition in from the mainstream.  Unfortunately he appeals the the minority muppets who appear to believe this illogical rubbish.

Omicron has breached the State borders and arrived.  Fortunately the time gained by closing the borders has enabled more than 80% of the population to be double vaccinated and we’re 25% triple vaccinated.  The government gets a big tick for that.  However I suspect our hospital system won’t be able to cope as it has been under funded for years.  The issue isn’t infrastructure, but qualified people.  We are going to suffer.  The question is by how much?

Something to be aware of when attaching lamps to your helmet is the possibility that they may not be visible to other vehicles' drivers due to their position relative to streetlights etc.
I very nearly hit a cyclist at an intersection in the dark once and only figured out why the next morning when I discovered his helmet mounted headlight lined up perfectly with a streetlight behind him. When I checked that direction his light position made him virtually invisible resulting in me almost driving forward into him. It definitely pays to have lights on your cycle as well and not solely rely on helmet mounted ones.

Hi Don,
The headlight is mounted on the front fork of the bike. My red flashing tail light is a temporary job on the back of my helmet.

Hi Tom

I'm pretty sure that here in the UK a bicycle must have a rear light attached to the bike. A light attached to the helmet or other clothing is of coarse allowed as long as there is also a fixed light.

So do you now have a USB lead from the top of your head, down inside your jacket followed by your trousers, out of the fly zip to plug into your battery bank just above the crank?

We are in the same situation here in New Zealand. The dreaded Omicrom has arrived here and is now in the community. Most of the eligible population is double vacced, many have had their booster shots, and the roll out for 5-11 year old has started. Where will it all end, I wonder, guess it just wont quietly give up and slip away.

Mick the minimum requirements here are a white reflector to the front and red to the rear (no lights). The wheels require orange reflectors.

Brian I knew you would be the one to work out the wiring. However you didn't mention the duct tape in the fly to prevent the usb cable from catching on an important appendage.

Jenny the advice we are receiving is Omicron is more transmissible but not quite as dangerous. The 1st & 2nd shots only provide about 40% protection against omicron with the booster raising it to 60+%. Cloth and paper facemasks provide minimal protection against omicron.

UK Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations (RVLR) law states that any vehicle must be fitted with reflectors during the time between sunset and sunrise. For a bike, this must be a red reflector on the rear of the bike and amber reflectors on the pedals, which must not be covered.

Brian, That is what my bike came with so I guess Oz is using the same standard. You and Paul have left similar comments regarding controlling the solar water heater.
