Canal Boat Magazine

I see Adam has written on his blog about the boat review he has written for the March edition of Canal Boat magazine.  We would like to see our February edition!

Somehow I don’t think it’s a problem with the publisher or distributor.  We have been speaking with the postman who told us they are only given a certain timeframe to complete their route along with a upper limit on the number of items that can be carried.  As a consequence “lower priority” items are left behind until there is a quiet day.  We’re starting to think they might mean quiet “week” or “month”.

Never mind.  In four months we will be able to purchase a copy directly from the nearest UK news outlet.

I am in Sydney and am still waiting for my January edition!
I read on the web site about delays to overseas deliveries being caused by snow in UK and
floods and cyclones on OZ!!

Hello Paul,
We usually get the monthly edition during the first week of that month whereas they are getting it the previous month in the UK (eg, Jan edition in Dec)
I suspect it's not the UK end as my wife's smaller and more frequent (weekly) UK magazines have been arriving.
Plus I have a sneaky look in the postmans holding box and it is full of what look like magazines.
If you are still waiting for the January edition then I suggest its gone missing and you email them for a replacement copy.
Regards
Tom

Oops. My lovely wife has just corrected me. We have not yet received the January edition of Canal Boat.

Looking at your plans we shouldnt be far behind you.
We had the animals vaccinated a few days ago, so if all goes well with the house sale we should be over there in about 7-8 months.
We plan to buy a boat whilst over there, lets hope the exchange rate doesnt change!
Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul,
We have decided to rent out our house during our absence. Next issue is to arrange temporary accommodation should the boat not be completed when we arrive at the end of May.
We're hoping to send some more money shortly so we can take advantage of the exchange rate.
Have you decided on the style of boat?
Regards
Tom

We will be looking for an Aqualine reverse layout with a cruiser stern.
Really like the neatness of the electrics on the Aqualines, built in Gdansk, if they can build ships narrowboats shouldnt be a problem.
Cruiser stern because we have a lot of family in the UK ( I left on a working holiday in 1980 and never returned)so I think we will have a few visitors.
We were considering renting out the house but because the pool is labour intensive I was worried i would be getting a bill for a new pool pump every month!
Probably buy a rental unit before we leave.

As a former electrician I also like the wiring precision in the Aqualine boats. Have you considered including the cost of additional pool maintenance in a rental agreement?

The pool is one reason, another is we have spent a lot of time and money making the house very liveable, I couldn't stand all the work being undone by some dodgy renters, its a old house and is quite maintenance intensive.
Another thing we were thinking, and only thinking at the mo is maybe buying a property in the UK whilst we are over there as in making the most of the exchange rate and their depressed housing market. In a few years time when we are ready to return to OZ we would be gambling on the UK house prices increasing and the pound picking up against the aussie battler.
Where do you guys live in SA?
We live in Manly, Sydney, hence the name of the future boat will be NB The Manly Ferry!

I hadn't thought of selling and then buying in the UK. Would I gamble that much money? Probably not!

Manly is a lovely spot. I once had a few days on North Head. We live on the Adelaide Hill face looking over the city and gulf.
