Padworth House

I had written in an earlier post about the imposing local building I’d noticed whilst walking one of the public footpaths to Tadley.

I’ve now identified it is currently a co-educational school, primarily for overseas students with a mix of day and boarders.  The school website has photo’s of what look to be foreign students.  It also states the school was established in 1963 by an Oxford University Tutor with the aim of “bringing an informal tutorial atmosphere to school-level education”.

The Royal Berkshire History website has more information on the history of the house which dates back to the 13th century.  Although I would be surprised if the current buildings were that old! 

At one time it was owned by “the famous general, Matthew Chitty Darby” (never heard of him). And it was also rented at one stage by “Thomas Bushby Bacon, the son of the great Welsh ironmaster, Anthony Bacon” (never heard of him either!)
