The new welder inspected Waiouru and we discussed the move of the wayward galley porthole. It needs to be moved at least six inches otherwise the wall oven won’t fit. This means filling in the existing opening and cutting a new one.
The current and new portholes will actually overlap. To compound the issue, there is a vertical batten in the way (red arrow). If I left the batten in place then it would probably ignite when the welder cut out the opening. So I took to it with a knife and heavy metal object. Something had to give…. and it wasn’t me!
Whilst the welder was on site (and within grasp) I requested that after completing the porthole job he welds in place the rear steel cabin doors given to us by Nick Thorpe Boatbuilders. We have decided not to recut both porthole opening in the rear cabin. The port (left) opening will provide sufficient light in the room and it will give us additional storage on the starboard (right) side. Andy had decided not to have the rear cabin porthole opening removed with the gas plasma torch as it might affect the glue used to affix the overlayed steel panel. We (probably me) will use a jigsaw to cut out the circle.
When the porthole opening has been moved and the rear doors fitted, we will be able to insert the portholes and houdini hatches. Waiouru will then be weatherproof and I’ll be able to make a start on the Kingspan underfloor insulation.
