Free GPS Maps

Reader if you’ve been travelling along with me via the blog for a couple of years you will know I use both a handheld and vehicle Garmin GPS.  They both came with a UK map, which I’ve discovered is becoming very dated.  Last time we hired a car and used the Garmin Nuvi for navigation it took us through the middle of a farmer’s field. Well it didn’t actually take us through the field……. a new road had been constructed.  Updating Garmin maps can be very expensive and it’s actually cheaper to buy a new GPS unit.

So I was rather delighted when I came upon a website providing free downloadable Garmin GPS maps of anywhere in the world.  The maps are based on the Open Street Map project which is in the public domain (ie free) and regularly updated by users (such as me).  It’s often more current than commercial navigation software.

If you have a Garmin GPS and want additional or updated maps then you might like to try the website here.

Yesterday evening I walked from our mooring up the Aylesbury Arm to Marsworth Junction to check for vacant visitor moorings.  It was a pleasant stroll with a couple of attractive canal scenes.
